Photo manipulation and ethics

1a. This story is mainly about how people who alter pictures are taking a risk at loosing their job and credibility. It is strongly advised to not alter the images because it takes away from the truth of what is really happening during that certain event.

1b. This editing of photos is unethical in my opinion. I believe that people deserve to know the truth, whether it be bad or good.

2 a. This picture, to me, is most unethical because the soldier seems to be denying the man and his child. When in reality, He is warning them to cover from Iraqi fire

2b. Thsi picture to me seems like the least unethical. The pyramids were only scooted closer to fit on the cover, which is fine since the cover really isnt all about those pyramids.

Ethics in Fashion photography

1. The models neck was one of the things that was changed. it made her a completely different person.

2. It shouldn't be ethically acceptable to change someone's appearance like so, but we see it everyday.

3. When you're trying to make a point that beauty is in everyone. If you're making a bad example if you post a picture of someone that is digitally fixed.

4. I dnt think any changes are okay. I think people should be left alone to show real beauty.

5. Photojournalism seems more on pictures and words. as in fashion photography is more on just pictures maybe.

6. There is no relation. If you're changing a photo of someone, it's not going to be real anymore. It changes that persons face which makes her a different person.

Negatives Evaluation

1. Most of my photos turned out blury. They were good pictures but blury.

2. Most of the photos are blury because I believe I may have not checked the light meter too well.

3. Well, my picture was the less blury of all. Which was why I chose it. I also liked the fact that it was a very good view point.

4. In my negative, I think the best apect there was, was one of the rules of composition I used. I used View point as one and my negative looks as though The camera was right where her face was, to seem like it was her looking at her hands as she works.

5. I tried to do certain things, but my mistake was I didn't really look for the three rules I had in mind, in the same one picture. In my favorite negative, I used View Point. Looking down from the persons view.

American Soldier : Slideshow and Captions

2a. I think the most powerful picture was in the "signing up" album. It was the guy and either his freind or his brother or family were sitting in the back of his truck and it was powerful because they really seem sad. They seem emotional.

2b. The most powerful sequence of pictures is the "first assignment" album. Because it shows in various pictures some of the problems he went through and had to endure.

2c. The images work together to tell a story in the form that they were all arranged in order and seperate. They show event after event following him around. To catch every moment of his life even when in Iraq.

3a. The captions are talking of Ian in passed tense.

3b. The captions enhance the pictures because you know for sure what is going on. You're not only guessing what is going on.

4a. Under Chapter 8: Coming Home,

5a. These other features enhance by explaining really what is going through his mind.

5b. The videos are better than the photos in the way that they are more interesting.

5c. The photos may be better in the form that they may be showing more. not only the same scene.

Malboro Marine Slideshow

2a. This photgrapher caught perfect moments. As he added his voice to the pictures it gave this feeling of reality. It reassured me that this is what is really happening.

2b. The effects were things like, how close he got to the subjects of his pictures. Adding the voice commentaries to the whole slideshow.

3a. The most powerful picture was where it was close to the Marines face. He caught this Marine with this expression on his face as he smoked that cigaret. It was like a "save me" expresion.

3b. The first couple of pictures were the strongest because they show actual pictures of the war that is going on at that moment. He placed himself in danger to take those close ups.

3c. The audio added a lot to the pictures because it makes you feel more into the picture, like you can understand what was happening through their mind. You feel yourself in the picture.

3d. The images show basically step by step what is happening, along to the audio telling the story.

Post shoot reflection

1. I really had problems getting people to concentrate when I was around. They would either be all squirmy or they would pose when I would say not to. It was difficult for them to concentrate.

2. I was trying to get different views on things. I didn't want all the pictures to be from the same angle and same subject doing the same thing as the other picture that I previously took.

3. I tried very hard to keep Rule of Thirds in mind. I tried that simplicity which was a failure for most of the part but rule of thirds seemed to work out well, and also I liked using point of view.

4. I think I would go over the rules of composition and see examples. So I could get an idea of what exactly it was I needed to take a better photographs.

Processing Black and White photos: Summary

In a completely dark room, crank open a cassette a film and remove the film. Place the flat end of the film to the flat end of the canister and start winding the film till it's all in. Then place the canister with the winded film into a film reel. Place the reel into a film tank and make sure the lid is on perfectly and tightly. When the film is securely in the tank, no light going in, turn the light on.
At this point you need to have your goggles on. You're about to work with the next chemicals: a film developer, a stop bath, and a fixer with hardener, then a wash. first you measure 1 part solutionts water. Measure the temperature. Look at the chart that determines how long you are going to keep it in there for. However long you have it, you agitate for 30 seconds, then let stand for 30 seconds. So on for the rest of the time. Then you pour out the solution, you immediately need to have the next chemical ready. Which would be a stop bath, to stop the film developer from doibng what it's doing. Then you pour it out and place the nest solution and see the time. and again, so on. One final wash for 5 minutes.
Take the negativese and place them on clips. Let them dry. In about 1 or 2 hours, They should be dry. Then you cut the film into strips. being super careful. Then place the negatives in clear glassine envelopes

dexterity- Skill in using your hands.

reticulation- the formation of a network of cracks or wrinkles in a photographic emulsion

Repetition

Lisa Simpson appears on television screens on a new Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 after its inaugural passenger flight from Singapore to Sydney, Australia.

In this picture, the seats are repeating all the way to the back. and Lisa Simpson's face is on all the tvs on the back of the seats.

A pattern of lights forms a giant 275-foot jack-o-lantern on the side of WaMu Center in downtown Seattle.

In this picture, the lights in the center building are in a pattern to make a desing and the building heights are relatively the same.
Twirly Barbie - A table football game using Barbie dolls is displayed at the International Design Festival in Berlin.

In this picture, The pattern being repeated is the order and the color of the barbies clothes.

Academic preview

Action and Emotion

I think this picture has a strong sense of sadness or loneliness. or shee seems like she is feeling lost. The way she is just sitting there against the lockers alone, drawing or writing.

Filling the Frame

I think this picture is filling the frame with the way they are showing the Bingo card and the ones that are already called. I think it's also interesting because one hand is older and the other is still young.

The Story
This picture seems like there's an interesting reason for them to be making these heart related objects. I think that the story behind it may be that they are making these for charity or maybe they're making them for fun. It just seems like there would be a story with a theme of hearts.

BEST OF SHOW Andrew Hefter, Allen High School

What makes this picture eye catching for me is the fact that it has reflection in the back. The trees that are reflecting off of the water in the backround and the headphones hanging just makes this picture pop out. What adds like an extra feature to this picture is it being taken in black and white.

sports

1.) Focal length of lens - f/2.8 fisheye
2.) Shutter Speed - shot at 1/1600
3.) What is the effect of shooting at this shutter speed? The photographer wants to portray the #20 Car and the drmatic sunset.
4.) Aperture-f/2.8
5.) What is the effect (Depth of field) of shooting at this aperture? Fish eye
6.) Position - Describe where you think the photographer was standing to get this shot.
I think he was maybe in the stands around the entrance.

Show and Tell

I think this picture is very emotional. I feel like the fact that they're grieving with the childs loss hugging his belongings makes this a strong picture.

I like this video because it shows how Austin is a big thing even around the world. The guy in this video is taking that video he's making to Guatemala.

Great Black and White Photographers, PART 3

1) When I chose this photographer, I was admiring the fact that most of his pictures were of women. He seemed to admire a womans body, all shapes and sizes. Even though after his death they found all those pictures of prostitues.

I see a woman enjoying the drink in her that seems to be an alcoholic beverage.

I smell the strong scent of the drink as the room is closed in.

I hear nothing but the clinking of the bottle hitting the glass when she pores the drink.

I taste the wind in the room, the dust.

I feel her vibe of hapiness coming from her. She seems relaxed and calm just sitting there, enjoying the drink.

I see a woman admiring a dog on her porch on a nice day. I see her leg propped up basically because she seems happy.

I smell the breeze of the nice day and I smell the dogs fur as she plays with him.

I hear her laughter and the dogs soft bark.

I taste the breeze.

I feel the wisp of the breeze against my skin.

3) What I would do to get this photgrapher more out there would probably be to go around to museums and find any people who like the photos and place them in the museum. Or I would post things on the internet and place them on a copyrighted secure sight.

Hurricane Ike

I like this picture because the photorapher took it very clearly taken. It caught my eye because It shows what happenedd and everything is perfectly lined up.

I chose this picture because the photographer caught a perfect picture of what exactly was on fire and what else was bound to catch fire because of these fumes. I think this picture has good balance.

Avoiding Mergers

I chose this picture because you can see the difference beween each building. No one building is blending/merging into another.

Monday, September 28, 2009

Negative and Positive

Differencess:
-The negative is opposite colors than the positive.
-The negative has objects on the opposite side than the postive.
-You can clearly see what exactly is there in the positive.

Negative: Noting an image in which the brightness values of the subject are reproduced so that the lightest areas are shown as the darkest.

Because the negative paper is sensitive to light, if you put it close to another light sensitive paper, it will reverse the tones and makes a positive.

Balance

I chose this picture because it didn't have too much going on. I liked that it had a balance between the colors.

The Rule of Thirds

This picture, I chose because the whole basic picture is smoke and gray. All you can see are these three men at the bottom of the screen. walking out covered in smoke and ash.

Lines

I chose this picture because the angle this picture is taken diagonal and it seems like thhe soldiers and officers standing there are perfectly aligned to the barracades.

Simplicity

I chose this one because you can clearly see the tower. It is simple. There is no distractions around the tower.

Framing

I chose this because it seemed perfect that it was taken between 2 other buildings. It semed as though the 2 buildings to the side are bordering one of the Twin Towers.

Pinhole Photos

Taken with a pinhole camera made from an Oreo tin by Deb Gessner. I really like this picture because you can see things clearly. The effect left on it is nice. What I think I admire most is that a handmade camera can take a pretty picture like this.

This is probably one of the ones I've least liked. Just because it's not very clear. It's not hard to tell what it is, but I just don't like that it seems real boring. It's not very sharp in any spots.

First Shoot

This is my least favorite because this students shirt caught the flash. You couldn't see the rest of the class.

This is my favorite picture of Mariela.

It's a big smile. Which makes a picture priceless.
